The Big Four Tour thrashes into Movie Theaters

MetallicaThe Big Four tour featuring Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax will start tearing through Europe this week. For one night only on June 22, The Big Four concert will be beamed to US and UK movie theaters. The historic metal event will give fans around the world to experience the tour of a lifetime.

As a metal fan and even more specifically a thrash metal fan, I was ecstatic when The Big Four Tour was announced. This will be the only time all four of arguably the biggest pioneers in thrash metal will share a stage and tour. Three of the four appeared 20 years ago on the Clash of the Titans tour in America. The addition of Metallica brings four decades of thrash metal full circle for the first time live in America via movie theaters.

The satellite broadcast of The Big Four Tour is something that could give the music industry a much needed boost of revenue. Album sales are dying and the concert business is losing money. The idea of taking a huge tour or concert and beaming it live around the world in movie theaters is something that should have been done years ago.

Why limit the opportunity for a band to play to thouands of their fans rather than millions? Additionally, the high price of a ticket to see bands like Metallica and even Slayer and Megadeth are pricing hardcore fans out of the building. Beaming these kinds of concerts to movie theaters would allow fans who don’t want to spend $100, pay less than $20 to see their favorite band live, loud, and in an intimate setting. In this case your money will get you four bands!

I love it and I hope The Big Four movie experience is a successful one. There are plenty of options for 3-D and Imax settings if this becomes successful. I think you need a bill like The Big Four to make something like this work. Seeing Metallica or Megadeth for $18 on their own in a movie theater would only appeal to a very niche audience. Taking a genre of music and creating a loaded lineup like The Big Four Tour will give music fans that little extra incentive to go out to your local movie theater and make a night out of it.

As excited as I am, I am a little disappointed that they chose a Tuesday night in the middle of June to do this. I think this could hurt the interest, although with college and high school out they may overcome any weekday issues. Taking into account that a vast majority of fans interested in something like this are old metal heads in their 30s with jobs and families, Tuesday night may be a tough sell. At the same time, I’d imagine it would be difficult to sell movie theaters on the idea of swapping out an 8 PM showing of The Karate Kid for a niche metal concert.

I will be checking out The Big Four Tour in a local movie theater near me on June 22. The good news is that there is a good chance you can too. I was blown away as to the amount of movie theaters around the country that will be carrying The Big Four concert. Four concerts, less than $20, and a movie theater full of metal heads sounds like a blast. I can’t wait for the tailgate!

Kyle Turley hits hard with “Anger Management”

Kyle TurleyDid you ever wonder what happens to a professional athlete after they have been out of the spotlight for a few years? Former NFL star Kyle Turley is one of many ex-professional athletes whose careers were cut short due to injuries. Yet for Kyle Turley, instead of crying about it he is singing about it. Kyle Turley is back with his first music album, “Anger Management.”

Most NFL fans are familiar with Kyle Turley. I always liked Kyle Turley because he told it like it was. Reporters never had to worry about Turley giving them a good quote as he always delivered. My memory of Turley on the field was the brawl he had with Damien Robinson. Even to this day, clips of the brawl are featured on some NFL Films’ compilations on ESPN and the NFL Network. Kyle Turley didn’t take crap from anyone on the field and he certainly didn’t take any off of the football field.

I was a little skeptical of Turley’s musical talents as I think most NFL fans would be. Yet once I started listening to his music, I really liked it. I am not a country music fan, but “Anger Management” has a nice hint of rock and roll to the CD. Turley cites metal Gods like Slayer and Pantera as influences, which inch through on “Anger Management.” If you didn’t know you were listening to an ex-NFL lineman, you’d probably think you were listening to one of country’s megastars. “Anger Management” is really that good.

Kyle Turley has also taken up the plight of ex-NFL players over the last several years. Turley regular speaks out often against the NFL’s treatment (or lack thereof) of ex-NFL players. Turley puts his money where his mouth is as proceeds from “Anger Management” go towards the Gridiron Greats charity. Gridiron Greats helps retired NFL players in dire need of financial and/or medical assistance.

SingingFool.com is giving away several copies of Kyle Turley’s new CD, “Anger Management.” Even if you don’t win, the proceeds of a purchase are going to an excellent cause.

New Justin Bieber Music Video Hits The Net

Justin BieberThe Internet is buzzing about the new Justin Bieber music video. The video for Justin Bieber’s new song, “Never Say Never” is fresh off of ‘The Karate Kid” soundtrack. The Karate Kid himself, Jaden Smith adds some rhymes to “Never Say Never” and appears with Justin Bieber in the video.

The Karate Kid soundtrack features Justin Bieber, along with Lady Gaga and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Early indications are that it looks like it will be Justin Bieber who has the big hit with the soundtrack. “Never Say Never” is trending well and is the theme song to The Karate Kid. Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith bring together two of pop culture’s leading teen icons in the new video.

Jaden Smith is the son of actor/singer Will Smith and actress Jada Pinkett. The Karate Kid stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Jackie Chan plays the Mr. Miagi-type character in the movie. The Karate Kid opens June 11 in movie theaters nationwide.

Paul McCartney Awarded Gershwin Prize

Paul McCartneyLegendary musician, Paul McCartney was honored by the US library this week. Paul McCartney was celebrated for five decades of music going back to his days in the Beatles. Paul McCartney received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, Washington’s highest award for accomplishments in popular music.

Paul McCartney will perform Wednesday night at the White House. President Barack Obama is expected to be just a few feet away from the former Beatle. Paul McCartney played a small private concert Tuesday night. Lucky audience members included Jerry Seinfeld (on the 20th anniversary of the debut of the Seinfeld television show), Stevie Wonder, and political dignitaries.

While Paul McCartney has already been knighted by Queen Elizabeth, this will be Sir Paul’s first major lifetime achievement award in the United States. McCartney backed out of a planned ceremony in 2002 which would have earned him a Kennedy Center Honor.

The entire event will be broadcast on July 28 on PBS. Jerry Seinfeld, the Jonas Brothers, and Faith Hill are among several artists who will honor Paul McCartney. Dave Grohl, Jack White, and Elvis Costello are all expected to perform tributes to Sir Paul.
