Twilight dominates 2010 MTV Movie Awards

Robert PattinsonIf you expected the Twilight hysteria to go away you’d be mistaken. The 2010 MTV Movie Awards made it painstakingly clear that Twilight and the Twilight movie series will go down as the cult classic for this teen generation. And to think we are still weeks away from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opening?

Twilight swept the 2010 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night. I can’t remember another movie dominating an MTV Movie Awards ceremony like this since the Lord of the Rings series almost ten years ago. Twilight won five awards including the prestigious annual MTV Movie Awards’ Best Movie award. This also marks only the second time a franchise has won back to back Best Movie Awards. Lord of the Rings ran the gauntlet three years in a row.

Team Edward’s Robert Pattinson was the big individual winner. Robert Pattinson was named the MTV Movie Awards’ Global Superstar of the Year. Pattinson beat out Zac Efron and Johnny Depp. I will preface this by saying I am not a Twilight fan, but how in the world can Robert Pattinson be considered a bigger global star than Zac Efron or Johnny Depp, especially Johnny Depp. Yes, Twilight is a global phenomenon but did everyone forget about “Remember Me“? I don’t think you give someone Global Star of the Year who had a box office bomb over two guys that are proven box office draws, one with a consistent body of work for over two decades. Although I’d love to see a battle of High School Musical fans vs. Twilight fans. I’ll go with Team Troy!

Overall if you are into celebrities and pop culture, you probably enjoyed the MTV Movie Awards. Aziz Ansari was a million times better as a host than Russell Brand was on the MTV Music Awards. If I had one complaint about Ansari it was that he wasn’t given enough time. I think he is hysterical and has a huge future in Hollywood. I just hope he pulls a Steve Carrell and sticks to his day job because he is tremendous on Parks and Recreation.

Unfortunately the MTV Movie Awards were kind of hard to watch at times as someone who absolutely hated the first Twilight movie (I was tricked into seeing it)! I’d expect the Twilight hysteria to continue for at least a few more years. With The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opening soon and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn scheduled to open in 2011, those crazy vampires aren’t flying away anytime soon.

Seriously, just a bunch of 12 year olds spending hours on the computer voting for the Twilight schmaltz. Glad I didn’t watch.
