The A-Team and The Karate Kid go to war

June 11, 2010 1 comment

The A-TeamThe summer movie choices continue to accumulate with two blockbuster remakes jumping into the mix. The A-Team and The Karate Kid will wage war for movie dollars this weekend as the newest  entrants into the pool of summer movies. Can either one of them be able to ambush Shrek or will it be a failed mission for two highly anticipated movie remakes?

The A-Team The A-Team recreates the classic 80’s A-Team television series with new faces, new plot lines, and a much bigger budget. Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson headline the all-star cast joined by UFC superstar Rampage Jackson in the role of B.A. Baracus. Can this remake live up to the hype or even outdo than the old George Peppard television series?

I was a huge fan of The A-Team as a kid so when I heard that the show was being remade I got excited. After watching a few The A-Team movie trailers, I am even more pumped for the movie. The action looks great, the characters look good, and it really looks like the concept stays true to the television show. The A-Team movie is one of the most heavily promoted movies of the summer so I’d get there early if you plan to see it this weekend. I have a feeling that you may be fighting for seats on opening weekend.

The Karate Kid – Coincidence or irony that the two top movies opening this weekend are remakes of classics from the 1980’s? Jaden Smith steps into the Ralph Macchio role as the bullied teenager who turns to karate for respect, confidence, and revenge. Jackie Chan plays the “Mr. Miagi” mentor role in the remake. The Karate Kid will look to kick down the box office on opening weekend.

The Karate Kid puts its own stamp on their version of the cult classic. Jaden Smith and family move to China and like Ralph Macchio, have a difficult time fitting into the new neighborhood. This is quite a jump from the original movie which saw Ralph Macchio’s family move within the United States. Jackie Chan takes Jaden Smith under his wing to teach him karate and even more so, how to stand up for himself against the school bully. The rest is history!

The Karate Kid movie trailers all look good and I am quite impressed with Jaden Smith. You never know what to expect (other than feeling old) when you see an A-List actor’s child on the screen in a big role for the first time. Jaden Smith looks like he handles the part well and it is nice to see Jackie Chan playing someone other than a goofy martial-artist. It will be really interesting to see if this one has the same appeal as the first one did when it took America by storm.

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work – Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work opens in limited release this weekend. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work is a documentary which spotlights one of the true legends of comedy. Joan Rivers lets the cameras in and what is produced is one of the most critically acclaimed documentaries of the year.

I love Joan Rivers so I may be a bit partial here. The trailers all look great and I can’t haven’t read one bad review of the movie. If her story isn’t enough, the movie captures Joan Rivers without makeup which is worth the price of the documentary in itself. The documentary follows her around the country on tour, her day-to-day activities, and tells her life story. How they can do this under two hours is beyond me.

I am not normally inclined to spend $10 to see a documentary in the movies but I may make an exception here. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work looks like a winner.

The Lottery – The Lottery is a documentary which covers the process that families in the Bronx and Harlem, NY have to go through to get their children enrolled into a charter school. The Lottery has the potential to set off a political firestorm if it can break through and achieve some mainstream success. Think “Nursery University” but a lot more serious.

New The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Trailer Magically Appears

Sorcerer's ApprenticeThe summer movie hype is about to get a little hotter with the release of a new The Sorcerer’s Apprentice trailer. The new trailer for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice movie really makes this film look like a must-see when it opens in July. Watch the new trailer and check out what is sure to be Nicolas Cage‘s next big hit.

The synopsis for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice reads

Balthazar Blake (NICOLAS CAGE) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (ALFRED MOLINA). Balthazar can’t do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (JAY BARUCHEL), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It’ll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE. The screenplay is by Matt Lopez and Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard from a screen story by Matt Lopez and Larry Konner & Mark Rosenthal.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is scheduled for a July 14, 2010 release. As things stand today it looks to be the only mega movie to debut that weekend. I loved the trailer and think it will appeal to a variety of movie fans from kids, adults, sci-fi, action-adventure, and even some comedy. I expect magical things from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Friends the movie?

FriendsIt appears a certain former “Friend” is a bit envious of the Sex and the City girls. Jennifer Aniston recently told the LA Times that she is interested in doing a Friends movie and has an idea in place. Is it time to dust off the coffee shop and bring back Ross, Joey, Chandler and the girls?

“A lot of things would have to break just right for it to work. But we’ve daydreamed about it,” Cox says, noting that series creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane would have to be involved. Her final verdict? “I don’t think it’s going to happen.” – LA Times.

I recently wrote about television shows that I’d like to see remade into movies. In the spirit of The A-Team, I stuck to 1970s-1980s television shows. If I were to make a list of 10-20 television shows from the last 20 years that I’d like to see remade into movies, I don’t know if Friends would even come to mind. Not that I think it wouldn’t work, but I never thought that the cast would have any interest in doing such a project. I think it is safe to say that Jennifer Aniston just got the hopes and dreams up of a few thousand die-hard Friends fans.

Ironically I would have thought that Jennifer Aniston would have been the hardest player of the bunch to get on board. Other than Courteney Cox’s television career, Jennifer Aniston has had a very successful career after Friends. Whether it would be schedule or ego, I wouldn’t think that she’d be interested in revisiting Rachel Green. The fact that this is her idea is really what stuns me altogether.

Jennifer Aniston cites the recent success of the Sex and the City franchise as inspiration for a Friends reunion. I can easily see the comparison. Both television shows probably have the same audience and are still relevant through syndication, Friends much more so. Whether it is jealousy or creativity propelling this idea, there are a lot of Friends fans that are very excited today. The biggest difference is that you only had to convince three girls to do Sex and the City (and one held the first one up for months) whereas you’d need to convince five other actors to get involved with a Friends project.

I don’t know where you’d go with a story in a Friends movie six years after the television show. Yet, I do think there would be mass appeal of seeing all of the old characters reunited on screen. Friends spans about two generations due to syndication so there is already a big audience in place for the movie. At the end of the day I don’t think the story matters a whole heck of a lot as long as the six Friends are sharing a couch back in their favorite coffee shop.

If they are going to do this, do it now! Just ask Mr. T what happens when you wait too long.

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds reuniting for new movie

Sandra Bullock and Ryan ReynoldsAre you ready for a full dose of Sandra Bullock? The “I’m fine” tour started at the MTV Movie Awards and will continue for some time. Sandra Bullock is looking to top off her tour with a familiar face. The Proposal co-stars, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds will reunite for a new movie. Could The Proposal 2 be around the corner?

Reports indicate that not only will Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds be working together again, but they will be joined by producers, a writer, and director from The Proposal. The current working title for the new project is, “Most Wanted.” As of this writing, “Most Wanted” has nothing to do with The Proposal. According to THR.com, the synopsis for “Most Wanted,” is…

“The story sees Bullock as a woman on the run with Reynolds as an agent who is supposed to be handling her. The project is described as having a tone similar to that of Midnight Run, Universal’s 1988 action comedy starring Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin. ”

At first view I thought “The Proposal” looked ridiculous and quite frankly, the idea was a bit of a stretch. However, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by The Proposal. Bullock and Reynolds had really good chemistry and made the movie work. Now “Most Wanted” doesn’t read like anything that The Proposal could pick up on, but you never know. The movie definitely left some doors open for a sequel or even a prequel.

Sandra Bullock has had mixed success with sequels. Speed 2 was a bomb while Miss Congeniality did very well and earned her a few Teen Choice Awards and a BET Comedy Award.

TV Shows I’d Like To See Remade Into Movies

June 8, 2010 1 comment

The A-TeamThe A-Team is the latest television show to be remade into a movie. The A-Team movie brings back one of my favorite television shows with new actors, a bigger budget, and advanced production beyond any original A-Team fan’s wildest imagination. Fantasy Island is right around the corner with Eddie Murphy. Could this just be the beginning of recreating our childhood television favorites on the big screen?

I came up with a quick list of late 1970-1980’s television shows that I would love to see remade into movies. Rather than throw the obvious names like the Sopranos and 24 I tried to keep my choices to 20th century, specifically (late 70’s-1980s) television.

In no particular order here are few television shows that I think would have huge potential if remade into a major movie today.

Buck Rogers and the 25th Century
Silver Spoons
Fantasy Island
Dallas
Cheers
21 Jump Street
The Six Million Dollar Man
Alf
Married with Children
Moonlighting
Sanford and Son
Taxi
The Golden Girls
Mama’s Family
Night Court

As you can see I am all over the place here with comedies, dramas, and sci-fi. I tried to give some serious thought as to what show would actually work on the big screen in the 21st century. There were plenty of other television shows I enjoyed as a kid, but I didn’t think a lot of them would work well in a movie unlike the list above.

So let’s hope for a big box office weekend for the A-Team. A big weekend could mean more remakes of old television shows. The Six Million Dollar Man and Mama’s Family the Movie could be right around the corner!
